The Different Types of Lilies…Which is Best for You?
If you are thinking of adding lilies to your garden or landscaping, there are many types of lilies from which to choose. There are so many, in fact, that listing each variety would be difficult.
However, there is a broader way to define the different types of lilies because they are placed in one of the categories listed below. The reasons one may choose specific types of lilies may be based on:
Bloom time
Color
Growing requirements
While a brief overview of each category is provided, you should ask a local expert’s advice before making a decision. Someone who is familiar with your climate will be able to help you make a well-informed decision about the type of lily that would work best in your area.
These are among the types of lilies that are a good choice for many beginners. They do not require a lot of care or expertise in order to thrive. They also bloom early, so they are a good choice for the gardener who may be a bit impatient.
This type produces flowers that are not fragrant and come in a wide variety of colors.
This type of lily is also an early bloomer. The flowers sport freckles and the plant, when properly cared for, can last for many seasons.
These flowers do best in the U.S. and in some parts of Canada due to their growing needs. The blooms curve up creating a very unique looking flower that comes in several shades including yellow, pink and lavender, all of which are spotted with freckles.
These are undoubtedly the most well recognized of all types of lilies. The gorgeous wide open blooms come in colors that include white, gold, plum, pink and more. They bloom later in the season and, because of the very large size of the flowers, may require a bit of assistance to remain upright.
These are, perhaps, not the best choice for beginners, but many cannot resist the urge to try and grow them because of their beauty and wonderful fragrance.
Typically called stargazer lilies, they require:
Abundant water
A bit of shade
High quality soil
Other Types Of Lilies
Other types of lilies include:
Candidum Hybrids
Longiflorum Hybrids
Miscellaneous Hybrids
These three types of lilies are a bit less well known that some of the other types, but are just as beautiful.
Candidum Hybrids, in particular, are usually only cultivated by those who deal in rare flowers. They are very difficult to find for sale at the typical nursery.
As mentioned above, some types of lilies are much easier to grow than others. If you are a beginner, seek the advice of local experts. In many cases, you will be able to plant a lily that you bought at a local florist, but only if the season is right.
It makes more sense to order your lilies from a nursery, where you will be able to ask questions and receive proper guidance.
Growing different types of lilies can be challenging, but you will be rewarded in the spring when the flowers bloom and provide a beautiful addition to your landscaping.
